March for Meals is Meals on Wheels of America’s annual national event to raise awareness about senior hunger and isolation. SOS/Meals on Wheels is celebrating March for Meals in several ways! On Friday, March 24th, local elected officials and VIPs will join SOS/Meals on Wheels to help deliver meals to seniors in their area. Throughout the month of March, volunteer teams will compete in our kitchen to see which team can pack 1,200 meals the fastest!

Fiestas Navideñas

The sparkle of the Mexican holiday celebration comes alive this season at the San Leandro Performing Arts Center on Friday, December 9th, Saturday, December 10th and Sunday, December 11th, for all ages to enjoy. The Ballet Folklorico Costa de Oro presents “Fiestas Navideas”, an exciting Ballet Folklorico performance that features a cast of 50 dancers of all ages, from 4 years old to Adult. The performance takes you on a musical journey through the traditions of the Mexican Christmas and showcases the dances of the various states of Mexico, all done in traditional dress. This is the perfect holiday entertainment for the whole family.This event is a benefit fundraiser for SOS/Meals on Wheels.

San Leandro Performing Arts Center is located at 2250 Bancroft Ave in San Leandro; on the San Leandro High School Campus. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the theatre.

Ballet Folklorico Costa de Oro is directed by Steven KoneffKlatt, founder and producer. He has been presenting Ballet Folklorico productions for 10 years around the bay area and teaches dance to the students of San Leandro High School.

America, Let’s Do Lunch!

Meals on Wheels America’s National Ad Council Campaign featured four SOS Meal recipients! “America, Let’s Do Lunch” launched nationally on July 12th, 2016. The campaign features seniors who currently receives Meals on Wheels and is designed to bring in a new influx of volunteers. The campaign includes TV Ads, print images, radio spots, social media and digital media images.

 

Lola Silvestri, 94 a resident of Hayward, CA. Lola is a San Francisco native and long time resident of Hayward, CA. Lola raised two children and worked in public relations for the Sears Roebuck Company. She was married for over 50 years and was widowed 5 years ago.

 

Charles and Maude Spann are 103 and 99 years old! They are longtime residents of San Lorenzo who have been married for 76 years! Charles was an electrician and Maude stayed home to raise their children. They are both independent types who only began receiving Meals on Wheels a few years ago. Their home is full of pictures of their large extended family which includes a great-great grandchild!

 

Julius Gaines is a retired school counselor, poet and amateur photographer. Mr Gaines was a school psychologist in the Berkeley public schools for almost 30 years before retiring in 1994. Mr. Gaines authored a book of poems entitled Homecoming – A Book of Poems which was published in 1996. Mr. Gaines received a grant from the Virginia Foundation for The Humanities to write a book about his native Staunton, Virginia. Mr. Gaines began receiving Meals on Wheels after he suffered a stroke in 2007.
